Why KAKAMEGA?

So many incredible sights to see in Kenya...Indian Ocean, Masai Mara, Mt Kenya, Samburu, Lake Naivasha, Lamu, Tsavo, Aberdaires, Lake Victoria...and of course the incomparable Rift Valley.

One might ask, "where in the world is Kakamega and why would anyone want to go there?" Well for starters, it is home to the only rainforest in Kenya. Surrounded by sugar cane and tea plantations, this lush agricultural land is situated on the Nandi Escarpment some 60km northeast of Lake Victoria.

300 Reasons to return to Kakamega? Absolutely. Since 2004 CES Canada has had a presence in rural western Kenya and this year 300 students are supported in their secondary and post secondary studies. All from humble backgrounds, each one has with the help of CES Kenya has created opportunities to grow, achieve and experience success.

That's it...I will be meeting 300 students, seeing them at two student Life Skills conferences, at some of our 24 schools and around Kakamega Town. These are among the brightest of Kenya's youth who when given a chance have proven they can compete nationally.

September 8-21, 2015 I have the privilege of travelling to encourage and promote the work of our students. You can take home photographs and tell stories about the sights and sounds of Kenya. But there is nothing that compares with shaking the hand of a motivated young person who says, "because of CES, I am what I am today."

So there you have it...300 scholars...needing to hear once again that they matter and that their education is worth more than gold.

Ask yourself, "what's preventing me from a visit to Kakamega?"  I say, "why not?"
